The beauty world is pretty excited about oils these days. From bronzing oil to pore-cleansing, makeup removing oil, there is something for just about every beauty need. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, I’ve been impressed with the way adding oil to my skincare routine has actually helped balance my skin’s oil (sebum) production. As it turns out, an oily skin condition can be exacerbated by lack of proper moisturizing. Skin tries to compensate and ends up producing more oil, which is often the last thing we want! The crazy things is that there are tons of plant oils out there that don’t clog pores. When I first added oils to my beauty regimen, it felt like I’d unlocked some hidden secret.
Aside from balancing oil production, natural face and body oils are can have an array of other beautifying properties, especially when combined with certain essential oils. For example, Uma Total Rejuvenation Night Oil contains Frankincense, which aids in cellular renewal to fade scars and discoloration. The blend of lemon, clary sage, and chamomile essential oils serve as both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory to help improve skin clarity. I’ve been using the oil every night for several months now. I don’t think my skin has ever been brighter or clearer. I did receive this bottle as a gift through my work at Peaceful Dumpling, but I may have to shell out for another bottle one when this one runs out! A final note on this oil–it smells like heaven.
Speaking of dreamy fragrances, I enjoy adding several drops of Earthbody Dream Body Oil to my regular body lotion. It features a nice blend of carrier oils, including jojoba, almond, grape, and rosehip seed. Rosehip seed oil is kind of like a natural retinol in that it’s packed with cell-renewing vitamin A. I think my favorite part about this blend is the essential oils, however. Sandalwood, lavender, frankincense, chamomile, and rosewood combine to make an almost spiritual fragrance. I like using it any time of day, but it’s especially soothing at night.
If my skin needs a little boost of moisture in the morning, I’ll add a few drops of Pelle Beauty’s ultra-lightweight Multitasking Face Oil, Stellar. It absorbs quickly and has an utterly uplifting fragrance. It’s also packed with some pretty nice oils like Meadowfoam, babassu, black currant, sandalwood, and neroli. Mmm…
Of course, you don’t want to pick up just any oil marketed as a wonder face or body oil. Oh no. You’ll want to avoid blends that contain mineral oil–which is not only bad for the environment (it’s a petroleum byproduct!), but it can clog pores and suffocate skin. Also, steer clear of synthetic fragrance, silicones (like dimethicone), and parabens (a synthetic preservative that mimics estrogen).
Instead, seek formulas with ingredients you recognize (and can pronounce). Or make your own face oil blend. I do it all the time! Olive oil, jojoba wax (it has the consistency of an oil), and argan oil are pretty safe bets. Just be sure to look for organic and cold-pressed varieties. Add a few drops to your favorite lotion or use alone.
